Humanity & Inclusion Appalled by Israeli Military Operation in Lebanon; Calls for Immediate Protection of Civilians

April 9, 2026

On April 8, Israeli Defense Forces launched a large-scale military operation across Lebanon, resulting in at least 200 people killed and more than 1,000 injured. The airstrikes hit areas in Beirut, the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, Sidon, and several villages in southern Lebanon.

Humanity & Inclusion is deeply alarmed and appalled by these attacks. The use of explosive weapons with wide-area effects in densely populated urban areas without effective warning has caused widespread death, destruction, and large-scale displacement.

Hannah Guedenet, HI-US Executive Director, says,

“We are witnessing a catastrophic disregard for human life across Lebanon. Deploying heavy weaponry in the heart of civilian neighborhoods—without giving families a chance to escape—is a recipe for disaster. We are devastated by the scale of the suffering, and we demand an end to this senseless loss.”

Such conduct is incompatible with International Humanitarian Law, particularly with regard to the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precautions in attack. Civilians must never be the target of hostilities.

All parties to the conflict must take immediate steps to protect civilians, including persons with disabilities, who are disproportionately affected and often face heightened barriers to safety and assistance. This pattern of harm is unacceptable and must stop.
