4 YEARS OF WAR IN UKRAINE

Four years into the war in Ukraine, widespread bombing and shelling have decimated critical infrastructure - including roads, hospitals, schools, and power grids - leaving entire regions isolated. After four years of indiscriminate attacks, Humanity & Inclusion is still on the ground, working to ensure that no one is left behind. And we'll be there for as long as it takes.

"HI is one of the very few organizations working in frontline regions. Our added value is being present where the needs are greatest, with a comprehensive approach that combines rehabilitation, mental health support, and protection services. Since 2022, HI has been filling the gaps, providing community-delivered rehabilitation where hospital services are absent."

WHAT PEOPLE ARE LIVING LIKE NOW

For four years, civilians have been subjected to indiscriminate and relentless bombing and shelling. They can be hit by a drone or aerial bomb while going about their daily routines, such as waiting in line at a pension office or taking the bus. Both small villages and densely populated areas are targeted. Since February 2022, 15,000 civilians have been killed and 40,000 have been injured (OHCHR)Living in a warzone puts individuals in a constant state of stress, and millions need physical rehabilitation due to life-altering injuries.

"Even in exhaustion, people discover inner strength when supported with care and compassion. With rehabilitation and psychosocial care, healing and new beginnings become possible."

- Natalia, Psychologist, HI Ukraine

"Recently we have seen a significant increase in requests for rehabilitation from people injured by rocket and drone attacks, aerial bombardments, and landmine explosions. Yet even after amputations and severe injuries, people find new confidence thanks to comprehensive support."

AncreURGENT NEED FOR PHYSICAL REHABILITATION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT

“We expect a huge need for rehabilitation.

There are thousands of injured people and many of these injuries can worsen or turn into permanent disabilities if people do not receive appropriate rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy and prosthetic fitting.

We know from responding to disasters in other countries that one of the heaviest legacies of this earthquake will be its psychological impact.

Surviving an earthquake can be a deeply traumatising experience - and it will be especially so for people who have already endured a decade of war in Syria.

George Graham portraitPsychological first aid is an essential component of the emergency response.”

George Graham, Chief Executive of Humanity & Inclusion UK.
