Statement: Declaration of Famine in Gaza

August 25, 2025

The latest declaration by Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released on August 22 confirms the worst; famine (IPC Phase 5) is currently occurring in Gaza Governorate and is projected to further expand by the end of September. The ongoing conflict, widespread displacement, restricted access, and the near-total collapse of the food systems are the key drivers of this man-made famine.

Despite several attempts, HI’s aid meant for the most vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, continues to be denied entry due to arbitrary bureaucratic measures and the continued blockade imposed by Israel. This is particularly alarming as malnutrition is a leading cause of disability.

Malnutrition threatens the lives of 132,000 children under five through June 2026, including 41,000 severe cases, doubling May’s numbers. For more details, check the full IPC report.

An immediate and permanent ceasefire, immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, along with large-scale unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance and the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, is the only way to alleviate this immense human suffering.

Spokespersons are available for interview upon media request.
