Statement: UNSC Resolution reauthorization failure for Syria

July 12, 2023

Humanity & Inclusion expresses disappointment and concern after the UN Security Council's failure to reauthorize the cross-border resolution for Syria. The resolution expired on July 11, leaving millions of people without humanitarian assistance.

Myriam Abord-Hugon, Country Director for HI's Syrian Crisis Response comments:

"This vote is yet another example when political interests have prevailed over humanitarian needs. This was a moment to demonstrate that the 4.1 million people living in northwest Syria, who rely on humanitarian assistance to fulfill their basic needs, should not be abandoned or left unsupported. Unfortunately, politics prevailed and we are still waiting for a new vote. We urge the UNSC to continue with diplomacy efforts and finally to come to a solution."
