Our actions

Humanity & Inclusion's emergency teams are responding to a catastrophic earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8. With your help, people with disabilities and new injuries will receive immediate and long-term support. Donate today.

Humanity & Inclusion began working in Morocco in 1993 and is one of the few international NGOs to have signed a headquarters agreement with the Moroccan Ministry of Cooperation and Foreign Affairs (1999). For over 20 years, HI has supported the development of a strong network of organizations of people with disabilities (OPD), building their capacity for self-advocacy and action.

Since 2011, in the context of reforms, HI Morocco has been working closely with the authorities to foster the development and implementation of inclusive public policies. The program’s collaboration has also been progressively extended to civil society organizations to promote inclusion and help meet the needs of people with disabilities and others experiencing hardship. HI is also working to improve the quality of life of migrant populations by strengthening representative organizations and improving access to vital resources such as health actors and referral mechanisms.

Morocco earthquake survivors in need of shelter

Almost a week after the earthquake, the disaster's impact is alarming: more than 380,000 people have been affected by the disaster, including thousands who are homeless.

Background

In terms of foreign policy, Morocco continues to position itself as a bridge between Europe and Africa, developing economic, trade, security and diplomatic ties with the European Union.

Morocco is particularly active on the African continent, joining the African Union in 2016 and applying to join ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) in 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic halted national growth and led to significant job losses, causing severe tension in the labor market in a country with one of the lowest labor force participation rates in the world. The Ukrainian crisis, combined with cereal production issues caused by drought and rising fuel prices have led to high inflation, despite the subsidising of basic necessities.

Policies to improve the social inclusion of people with disabilities are still poorly implemented, partly due to a lack of funding. People with disabilities have few dedicated services (carers, accessibility of buildings, etc.) and their inclusion in civil society remains limited. Organizations of people with disabilities are working to change this situation.
