Why monthly giving makes your dollars go further

Posted on Take Action by Elizabeth Johnson Sellers · December 01, 2022 10:54 AM

Did you know monthly giving can be a better option for you and the people we serve? Here are just 5 reasons why you should consider becoming a First Responder with Humanity & Inclusion.

I pledged my first monthly gift to Humanity & Inclusion in 2013. Since then, I’ve felt confident knowing that my regular contributions allowed the organization to respond quickly and take innovation to the next level – and you can, too. It’s with those dollars that I’ve witnessed my colleagues respond in times of crisis: when earthquakes rocked Nepal and Haiti; when improperly stored explosives blasted the port of Beirut in Lebanon; when super storms battered the Philippines and Mozambique; when war broke out in Yemen and Ukraine; when drought dried up food sources in Madagascar and Ethiopia; when civil unrest drove people from Myanmar to Bangladesh and from Venezuela to Colombia and Peru. In all of these instances, Humanity & Inclusion’s teams needed to respond right away and to stay the course, even years later.

At the same time, I’ve seen how my HI colleagues have used these precious regular donations to innovate and create new ways of working; from developing artificial limbs that are 3D printed, to scanning landmine-infested territory with ground penetrating radar aboard drones to adapting physical therapy into telerehabilitation during Covid-19. These monthly gifts have provided the resources needed to develop new and creative programs. – Jeff Meer, U.S. Executive Director at Humanity & Inclusion

1. Control your giving

When you start a regular gift, you’ll choose the amount you wish to give each month — and you’ll have peace of mind knowing your dollars are being put to work where they are needed most. Whatever amount you choose to give means more people will receive the care and rehabilitation they need and deserve, so they can be safer, feel better, and accomplish more in life.

We understand that financial situations can change. So, if you ever decide to increase or decrease your regular donation amount, you can easily do so via our Donor Portal or by contacting us at [email protected]. You can also cancel or pause your plan at any time.

2. Join a compassionate giving community

As a monthly donor, you'll be a Humanity & Inclusion First Responder. Each morning, you'll wake up knowing that your generosity is making a difference for someone somewhere.

You’ll receive exclusive email updates on the impact you’re making: From children with disabilities attending school for the first time, to people injured by explosive weapons taking their first steps with an artificial limb, to families displaced by natural disasters rebuilding their lives. And twice a year, The Next Step newsletter will be delivered right to your door.

3. Ensure no one is left behind

For more than 40 years, Humanity & Inclusion has worked alongside people with disabilities, aging individuals, women and girls, landmine survivors and individuals living in situations of extreme hardship. Our teams respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights. Your monthly gift provides holistic support from our experts in inclusive education, livelihoods, health, governance, and disaster risk reduction.

With Humanity & Inclusion, you'll know that each dollar you give funds inclusive aid. People with disabilities will access quality education, jobs and health care; participate in political matters and influence policy; break down barriers and fight discrimination in their communities. Your consistent giving will help our teams plan ahead, bolster existing programs, innovate new solutions and, ultimately, reach even more people.

4. Launch emergency responses

We act fast when natural and civil disasters strike. With teams on the ground in 60 countries, Humanity & Inclusion is positioned to provide aid in the immediate aftermath of earthquakes, typhoons and other climate disasters. And in active war zones, our experts transport humanitarian supplies and render medical aid to injured and displaced civilians. With your regular contributions, we can act even faster in these times of immense need.

5. Be there after crises disappear from headlines

When floodwaters recede and peace treaties are signed, communities are left to rebuild. Our teams remain by their sides on the path to recovery and healing. Your gifts will help students return to school, people with disabilities start their own businesses, farmers cultivate land cleared of explosive weapons, and injured civilians regain independence with rehabilitation and mental health care.

We often receive a swell of one-time gifts in the wake of emergencies, but those dollars are quickly spent to meet the immediate needs of the communities we serve. And while we are extremely grateful for those contributions, they only go so far. Giving monthly is the surest way to provide sustainable, long-term support to the people who need it most.

Leaving your positive mark on the world

Such a gift could be your most powerful and lasting legacy, stretching your generosity to marginalized groups the moment help is needed.

If you choose to leave a planned gift to Humanity & Inclusion, we would be honored to recognize your extraordinary commitment as a member of our Legacy Society.

Ways to Give a Legacy Gift

Designating Accounts
Bequest
FreeWill (online will-writing tool)
Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCDs)
Stock Donation
Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)

Designating Accounts

Have you updated your legacy-planning strategy to include Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary?

You can designate Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary for:

  • Retirement plans: 401(k), 403 (b), IRA
  • Life insurance policies
  • Donor-advised funds
  • Commercial annuities
  • Bank accounts

When you're ready, making an organization the beneficiary of your assets is typically straightforward:

  1. Request and fill out a designated beneficiary form through your employer or your plan administrator. Most banks and financial firms also have beneficiary forms, or they can provide you with suggested language for naming beneficiaries to your accounts.
  2. On the beneficiary form, decide what percentage (up to 100%) you would like us to receive and name Humanity & Inclusion as the beneficiary. Please use our Federal Tax Identification number: 55-0914744 in place of a social security number.
  3. Once the designated beneficiary forms are in place, the retirement assets will generally pass directly to your beneficiaries (including organizations like Humanity & Inclusion) without issue.

Your investment can help shape programs that sustain deserving communities beyond our respective lifetime.

Bequest

A simple way to establish your legacy is to designate Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary of your will and trust. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, such as securities or real estate, or leave a percentage of your estate, or the residual of your estate, after providing for loved ones.

Specific Bequests allow you to designate a percentage of your estate, a dollar amount, or specified assets as a gift to Humanity & Inclusion.

Sample language:
I give, devise and bequeath __________ [state a % or $ amount, or specific property or other asset] to Humanity & Inclusion, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, to be used for its general purposes [or for a particular program or purpose].

Residual Bequests allow you to designate the remaining residue of your estate as a gift to Humanity & Inclusion, after the payment of all expenses and specific bequests to other beneficiaries have been made.

Sample language:
I give, devise and bequeath to Humanity & Inclusion, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, all [or state a percentage] of the rest and residue of my estate to be used for its general purposes [or for a particular
program or purpose].

FreeWill

For those of us who wish to explore legacy-planning options but don’t know where to start: Humanity & Inclusion partners with Free Will to promote free will-writing options for those who may find value in such service. Our staff has even used FreeWill to designate Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary and you can, too.

It’s easy – visit www.freewill.com to learn more, create an account, and secure your assets for generations to come. You can support Humanity & Inclusion’s mission for years to come in less than 20 minutes, entirely for free! Get started today.

Already have a legacy and an up-to-date will? The only thing left to do is fill out this online form to inform us of your gift. We would love to thank you!

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCDs)

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is for donors aged 70 1/2 and older to decrease their taxable income by donating directly from their IRA. You can contribute up to $100,000 a year, and it may satisfy your required minimum distribution.

How it works:

  1. Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift from your IRA to Humanity & Inclusion
  2. Your IRA funds will be directly transferred to Humanity & Inclusion to help continue our important work
  3. Please note that IRA charitable rollover gifts do not qualify for a charitable deduction
  4. Please contact us if you wish for your gift to be used for a specific purpose

Looking for a simple way to get started? Use this free online tool to learn more about how a QCD can support Humanity & Inclusion and your finances, and access the necessary forms for your custodian to complete your gift in 10 minutes or less.

Stock Donation

If you’re looking for a tax-smart way to leave your legacy, consider a gift of stock. When you give appreciated stock that you’ve owned for more than one year, you can avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction when you itemize.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)

You can initiate a grant recommendation from your donor-advised fund (DAF) directly to Humanity & Inclusion in three easy ways: make a one-time gift, establish an automatic recurring gift, or designate Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary of all or a portion of your remaining DAF funds.

Gift of Stock

Posted on Donate by Elizabeth Johnson Sellers · February 01, 2016 5:03 PM

So you want to make a gift of stock?

When you gift stock that you've owned for more than one year and itemize, you can receive a charitable income tax deduction. And your generous gift will be used to support families displaced by conflict, people with disabilities, survivors of natural disasters and the rest of the communities we serve across nearly 60 countries.

How it works

You gain a deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock at the time of the transfer (its increased value), and benefit from zero capital gains tax on the designated stock donation. Once received, Humanity & Inclusion immediately releases the stock in accordance with best practice protections in place. We remain committed to transparency while honoring the fair value of your gift.

Kindly notify us of your intended gift of stock by filling out a stock transfer form by noting your brokerage firm, contact info, ticker symbol and the volume of stock you wish to transfer to Humanity & Inclusion's Vanguard account. You may submit the form to your broker or financial institution to initiate the transfer.

Donor Advised Funds

Legacy-Building Decisions: Making a Gift through Your Donor-Advised-Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a philanthropic giving tool that allows you contribute cash and other assets into an investment account that grows tax-free. You'll receive an immediate tax deduction for your contributions and can recommend grants to be distributed by your DAF's sponsoring organization over time to your charity of choice, like Humanity & Inclusion. By utilizing a donor-advised fund, you can benefit from tax incentives while creating a lasting legacy through strategic giving.

You can initiate a grant recommendation from your donor-advised fund (DAF) directly to Humanity & Inclusion in three easy ways:

DAF Widget

Find your DAF, and set up a one-time, or recurring grant to Humanity & Inclusion.

daf widget placeholder: do not remove

Make a one-time gift

Contact your DAF administrator and recommend a one-time grant directly to Humanity & Inclusion.

Please make checks payable to Handicap International dba Humanity & Inclusion.

Establish a recurring, monthly or quarterly gift

Initiate an automatic monthly or quarterly gift from your Donor Advised Fund is one of the easiest ways to provide year-round support to the communities we serve.

If you're already a regular donor, you can set up your gifts to come from your DAF instead of your checking account or credit card.

Create your legacy

Designate Humanity & Inclusion as a beneficiary of all or a portion of your funds remaining in your Donor Advised Fund.

When making your grant recommendation, please use the following information:

Handicap International dba Humanity & Inclusion
8757 Georgia Ave, Suite 420
Silver Spring, MD 20910
EIN/tax ID number: 55-0914744

Please provide your name and/or fund name and address so we can thank you for your generous gift.

Let us know!

Sometimes, DAF gifts arrive without information identifying the generous donor.

We always honor the requests of our donors, but if you perhaps set a gift to be anonymous in error, and haven't heard from us (we love to say Thanks!), then please let us know so we can shower you with some appreciation.

Please reach out at any time! Simply contact Mica Bevington, U.S. Director of Communications and Development, at (240) 450-3531 or [email protected].

All inquiries are welcome and held in the strictest confidence. You are never obligated to make a gift. This information is not and should not be construed as legal or tax advice. State laws vary. It's recommended that you contact your own attorney and/or other professional advisers when considering your philanthropic, estate and financial planning.
