Mali | Improvised landmine explosion kills 15 people and injures 30

SEPTEMBER 05, 2019

Fifteen people were killed and more than 30 injured when a bus hit an improvised landmine in the center of Mali on Tuesday, September 3.

Humanity & Inclusion is mobilizing its regional teams, and is working with the organizations involved in the relief effort to provide assistance to the injured people who were evacuated to hospital. Teams are providing blankets, food and hygiene products, as well as psychological support, with the help of our partners in Douentza.

In Mali, Humanity & Inclusion mainly works on victim assistance projects for the victims of armed conflicts, and is deeply concerned that once again an improved explosive device has claimed civilian victims. In 2017, there were more than 2,700 victims of improved explosive devices worldwide, as reported in the 2018 Landmine Monitor. In Mali, since the start of 2019, there have already been 138 accidents caused by improvised landmines, according to UNMAS.

Humanity & Inclusion has been working in Mali since 1996, implementing humanitarian and development activities in the regions of Sikasso, Bamako, Mopti, Timbuktu and Gao.
